Luxology did in Paris, a presentation of its new modo 401 release. It was a good opportunity for me to see what was new and more important, in action. The other great opportunity was also to talk with the Luxology team directly. Here is a recap.

Around sixty people were waiting at 2:30pm for this presentation of modo in Paris. It started with some drinks, Cannelés and Macarons (you have to try this french sweets!) and at 3pm, everybody entered in the event room. Chrystèle and Immanuel (Director of Sales at Luxology) did a short introduction about the presentation which started by a recorded message of Brad Peebler.

Luxology Introduction

Well, numbers and informations about modo, the company, the licensing of the Nexus technology and all kid of things which can be interesting to know. It was not too long, not too short (most of the time, this parts are always long :))

brad

Hey, Brad Peebler is talking to us! 🙂

Standard Non-Standard company

This french company is specialized in the 3D printing and the team is using intensively modo for 3D creation, but also cleaning the models before printing. They did a presentation of different projects, from architectural to toy design. They are also offering some nice extra work as a post process for the printed creation like painting, etc. It was interesting to see their work, but seeing modo in action to discover how they are using it to clean their models may have been interesting too 🙂

They offer some service like Offload Studios in the US are doing. Good to know!

Black Rock Studios/Disney

I never heard of this video game studio, own by Disney. They have some cool games on next (well, current :)) generation games console like PURE and they are intensively using modo for their production. The problem of this presentation was its length. I think that all of us were waiting to see more screenshot of modo, or better, a live demo. This presentation was in fact more an advert for the studio than a presentation focused on modo.

Steve from Black Rock Studio with a screenshot of their editor. We also saw some modo screenshots 🙂

goz

A nice surprise in the presentation: GoZ! He spoke of our feature and not the other ones 🙂

Modo 401 presentation

Andy Brown was here to do a presentation of the new modo 401 features. Because of the length of the previous presentation, Andy had to do his part too quickly. It was almost impossible to follow what he was doing (he is fast! 🙂 I was happy to see some new tools like the retopology ones. I have to test them because such feature is a good addition for ZBrush users.

In fact, nothing really new if you already know/knew the videos posted on the website or in the forum, and for the ones which were here to discover modo (like the guy which was on my right), no overall introduction. I was expecting to learn something but, well, nothing except being aware of things that I didn't know (but which I have to discover/master 🙂

Note: I just saw the video that Brad posted about the presentation of Andy on Vimeo: it's a 42 minutes one... and the Andy presentation was only 20-25 minutes. Damn! Too bad that Andy had to hurry!

andy

Andy, impressive in his presentation!

rig

The new rigging tool are, like Andy, impressive. A lot to learn in perspective. You can notice the HUD window on the bottom left.

Conclusion

This day was interesting, perhaps for someone like me because it provided me some good contacts and nice talks about modo (and even ZBrush) with a lot of people. The Luxology team is a really cool and great one, with which you can freely talk. We also had a nice evening and a good diner, talking about modo and others things. Then, pros and cons about this modo road tour.
